NEW YORK (WPIX)—Staten Island-based rapper Method Man surrendered to authorities Monday, after officials say he failed to pay $32, 799 in personal income taxes over a three-year period.
According to Richmond County District Attorney Daniel Donovan, the hip hop star whose real name is Clifford Smith, failed to file New York State Income Tax Returns for the period between 2004 and 2007 resulting in his arrest. Smith, was charged with a failure to pay tax, a misdemeanor charge.
Smith is expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon in Staten Island Criminal Court. He faces up to four years in prison, if convicted.
This isn't Smith's first run-in with the law in recent years. In May 2007, the rapper was arrested outside the Battery Tunnel in Brooklyn following a routine traffic stop.
According to police, when Smith rolled down his window, an officer noticed a strong smell of marijuana. Another officer reportedly described the scene "like something out of Cheech & Chong." Smith was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, criminal possession of marijuana, operating a motor vehicle under the influence and driving an uninspected motor vehicle.
