A person sun bathing at Long Beach Wednesday afternoon was mowed down by a police officer reporting to a water rescue, PIX 11 News has learned.

The victim was reportedly lying in a chair when he was run over by the SUV shortly before 12:30 p.m.

The vehicle was being driven by a Long Beach Police officer who was responding to a report of a surfer in distress.

The victim, described as a man in his 40s, was rushed by helicopter to Nassau University Medical Center. He had sustained internal injuries, however city officials said they may not be life-threatening.

It's unclear why police officer did not see the sunbather in his path. Although, it's being reported the victim's chair was low to the ground and may have been hidden in sand.

The surfer was not injured.
