CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (WPIX)
A man is accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death before fatally shooting a friend and leading police on a chase which ultimately ended in his death, according to Suffolk County police.
The incident unfolded around 2:30 a.m. when someone on Atlantic Avenue in Central Islip called 911 to report the stabbing of a woman, authorities said. When authorities arrived to the home, they found Jessica Hernandez, 22, with multiple stab wounds. Hernandez was rushed to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
People who live in the home told police they saw Genis Walker, 26, stab Hernandez and flee the scene in one of the residents' vehicle.
About six hours after allegedly murdering Hernandez, Walker arrived at the home of friends he knew on Waterworks Road in Patchogue and apparently committed another crime. When police were called to that home, they found Arthur Ward, 26, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where he was later pronounced dead.
The suspect then reportedly fled in a car, sending authorities on a wild chase near the Long Island Expressway. A helicopter and other police vehicles also joined the chase.
Officers finally caught Walker after they put down a tire-punching device on Horseblock Road in Farmingville. The suspect apparently drove over the device, prompting him to puncture his tires and crash into a police supply store.
When officer went to help Walker in the vehicle, he was apparently wounded from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
