One student was killed and another injured Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Farmingdale State College after being struck by a garbage truck, according to authorities.

The incident occurred as the students were walking near Lupton Hall around noon. The female pedestrian, believed to be a part-time student taking a summer class, was immediately killed when the truck backed into her. The male, identified as a student at Farmingdale since 2006, was rushed to New Island Hospital in Bethpage with unspecified injuries.

The garbage truck was being operated by Jamaica Ash, a private contractor for the school. The driver of the truck was also hospitalized.

So far, no charges have been filed. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
