Kenneth Lesser, 58, of Commack, was driving a Toyota van on Tuesday evening when he was struck by a Ford truck at the intersection of New Highway and Harned Road, according to police. The truck then struck a Nissan Altima, which was waiting for a traffic light.
The driver of the Nissan, Tina Marie Fisher, 25, of Commack complained of back pains and was taken to the Huntington Hospital.
Rodrigo Ramirez-Vega, 25, of Kings Park, the driver of the Ford, was speeding southbound on Harned Road when he went through a red light and struck the Toyota, police said. Ramirez and his passenger, Victor Franco, 31, of Woodside, Queens, were both taken to Good Samaritan Hospital.
After his release from the hospital, Ramirez-Vega was arrested and charged with DWI. The crash left the victim, Lesser, trapped in his vehicle, and police say he died at the scene.
Ramirez-Vega will be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
