NASSAU COUNTY, NY (PIX11)—If you live in Nassau County, you are more likely now than you were this time last year to be burglarized. Recently released crime statistics show burglaries are up countywide.
"This might be a blib," said East Meadow resident James Pollack.
If you look specifically at home burglaries, cops said they are up 111 percent. Statistics show trouble spots are East Meadow, Levittown, Plainview, Jericho and Bethpage.
"They are burglarizing homes for jewelry to get cash it's scary," said one Nassau county parent.
Retired NYPD Detective, Wally Zeins, said the numbers do not always paint an accurate picture. He said the mild winter could being playing role in the rising numbers.
"We call snow and rain an extra police officer," he said.
But it should be a wake-up call. While police will do their best to catch the bad guys, you need to keep an eye out.
"Remember to set the alarm, keep the bushes trimmed if leaving for the weekend make sure the mail is picked up," said Zeins.
