NEW YORK (PIX11)—Police on Long Island have arrested and charged a 20-year-old man with DWI following an early morning crash that left an off-duty NYPD cop dead and two others injured.
According to authorities, Officer Kevin Jessup, 25, was behind the wheel of his Nissan Maxima driving along the Southern State Parkway on Long Island when a vehicle driven by Jonathan Lopez careened into him from behind, sending Jessup's car smashing through a guardrail.
His girlfriend, 30-year-old Crystal Simons, suffered only minor injuries.
Lopez, who also suffered minor injuries, was charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, assault and speeding.
Lopez was arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead. He was ordered held on $100,000 bail.
Jessup's family revealed Monday that the fallen police officer was motivated to become a cop after the September 11th terrorist attacks.
"He wanted to become a cop after 9/11," the cop's father, Ron Jessup, told the New York Daily News. "I gave him my blessing. And ironically he died on 9/11."
"9/11 has a whole new meaning now ... It's the worst damned day ever."
