MIDDLE ISLAND, NY (PIX11)—Middle Island, Long Island - The California couple was all smiles as they revealed themselves the winners of the New York Mega Millions jackpot.
"It is exciting but just very surreal," said Daniel shaking his head.
"I needed to get some food for dinner we were making and I saw how big the Mega was and decided to get some tickets," said Daniel.
That was December 27th. The next morning, it was a family effort to figure out if they won.
Christine explained what happened next. "My dad says the winning ticket was bought at King Kullen and Dan bought his ticket there... So, to humor him (her dad) I went up and woke Dan up and said jokingly, my dad thinks you won, go check your numbers."
It turns out it was no joke.
One set of Quick Pick numbers on Daniel's ticket matched exactly and the Bruckners instantly became $100 million dollars richer. (That's after taxes and taking the lump sum.)
"It hasn't sunk in it yet," said Christine.
The manager of the King Kullen grocery store in Middle Island feels almost the same way. "Its an exciting time. The store was hoping it was an employee because there was a bunch of employees that play together," said Tony Femminella.
It didn't turn out to be an employee but hopefully the employees will benefit from the $10,000 check the store received for selling the winning ticket.
As for the Bruckners, the money is coming at a great time for them.
Daniel works as a financial analyst and Christine is recently unemployed.
"I've never been around any money like this before. So, The concept of how much it is and making sure we have the right people around us to make right decisions with it," said Daniel.
They say they'll pay off bills and school loans right away.
As for anything else? "We don't know what the future holds for us."
