GERRITSEN BEACH, BROOKLYN (PIX11)—Just last month, the field behind PS 277 in Gerritsen Beach was the site of celebration as volunteers planted hundreds upon hundreds of trees as part of Mayor Bloomberg's "Million Tree Program."
"Trees give us so much and ask so little in return, just a little love and attention," Bloomberg said in a past press conference.
"A couple of weeks ago they planted a bunch of oak trees, then yesterday I came and they were all ripped out," local resident Marina Kviker said.
The destruction, which was first reported on the blog GerritsenBeach.net is staggering. Almost every tree sapling has been uprooted. Fences around the baseball field are destroyed. Garbage is everywhere. And the trail of destruction extends beyond the field to nearby streets.
Local deli worker, Joe Nicoletti still can't believe his eyes.
"I came to work and the bus stop glass was broken. There were a bunch of baby trees all over the sidewalks. They also broke the window in the liquor store," Nicolette said.
While police are investigating who did this, some residents are pointing at teenagers who may be connected to other vandalism attacks in the area. As for the field, the Parks Department says it will have it cleaned up tomorrow. Residents hope a tree replanting can follow.
