Suffolk County police are investigating the death of an infant discovered in a Yaphank trash facility Monday morning.

Authorities tell PIX News, a supervisor at the Winters Brothers facility found the baby's remains in a trash bale as it was about to be processed at around 9 a.m. The employee alerted police after discovering the hands and arms of the infant dangling from the bin.

The race, age and gender of the infant remains unclear. The body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

It remains unclear if the infant was discarded in a dumpster or thrown out in a residential garbage can. However, investigators have established that the baby was brought into the facility by a trash hauler sometime after 5:30 a.m. Monday.

"We're looking to find out the routes that this garbage took before it reached this facility," said Suffolk County Police Detective Lieutenant Jack Fitzpatrick.

The facility, located on Old Dock Road, takes in refuse from both residential and commercial customers throughout Suffolk County, police said.

Yaphank is located about 60 miles east of Manhattan.
