Over 50 Cats Discovered In Long Island Home
What started out as an response to a medical emergency soon unraveled into a full blown animal rescue after authorities uncovered over 50 cats in a Long Island home.

According to officials, police were called to a home on Gerard Road in Yaphank Tuesday night where a woman was said to have a broken hip.

When crews entered the home, they not only discovered the injured woman but dozens of cats living in squalor, surrounded in feces and urine.

The stench was reportedly so bad, firefighters were forced to don masks to avoid inhaling the horrific odor.

Officers with the Suffolk County SPCA were summoned to the home where they are evaluating the cats, all which appear to be in good health. The total of cats found at the home remains unclear.

The homeowner, who wasn't immediately identified, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. It wasn't clear if any charges will be filed against the woman.
