Police have charged a 33-year-old man in the brutal stabbing of his live-in girlfriend who was nearly decapitated inside the couple's Lower East Side apartment.

According to authorities, Raul Barrera turned himself in early Sunday, confessing to the slaying of girlfriend Sarah Coit.

Barrera was charged with second-degree murder Monday and ordered held without bail.

According to police, the victim, Sarah Coit, was found lying in a pool of her own blood on the living room floor inside the Clinton Street apartment she shared with the suspect. Coit, who was still alive when EMS crews arrived to the scene, suffered multiple stab wounds and was nearly decapitated in the shocking attack.

Coit was rushed to Beth Israel Hospital where she was pronounced dead an hour later.

According to reports, a heated argument between the couple erupted moments before Coit was heard screaming for her life. The screams grew so loud, it woke up several neighbors, prompting them to call police.

Barrera, who did enter a plea to the murder charge Monday, remains on suicide watch, officials said.
