People who live on Smith Mountain Lake may want to know why the water level is lower even after last week's heavy rain.
Appalachian Power did it on purpose.
A company representative says water is pumped out of the lake monthly to generate electricity.
Just this week the company pumped water from Smith Mountain into nearby Leesville Lake.
The levels are adjusted regularly to give customers power and keep the lakes full.
This is a process the power company has relied on since the 1960's.
