With so many dating websites cluttering cyberspace, a new one among the bunch has managed to create controversy.
"Shock, disturbed, confused," says Emily Wood, a student at Hollins University.
"It just seems kind of wrong," says Ryan Williams, a student at Virginia Western Community College.
WhatsYourPrice.com is not your typical dating website. The twist? You have to pay the person to date them and that person can reject your offer if it's not what they want.
"I don't know if I'd call it prostitution. I'd definitely say it is a form of sexual commerce," says Lee Ray Costa, a professor at Hollins University.
Costa, teaches topics related to Gender and Women's study's. She believes WhatsYourPrice is certainly a step in the wrong direction for women's rights.
"And I think that what makes it particularly degrading in my opinion is that it reinforces once again, (the) sexualization of women's bodies, the objectification of women's bodies and the commodification of women's bodies and those are the ways that are similar to prostitution," says Costa.
While more women are featured prominently on the site, women can also bid on men. One more thing, this site targets the college crowd.
"Really the bid is between two people so you could bid a price and if the person is not happy with it, they can really come back to you with a counter offer so to say," says Brandon Wade, the founder of WhatsYourPrice.com.
Wade is a self-proclaimed nerd who didn't get his first kiss until he was 21. He patterned the site after charity dating. A new kind of way to make big bucks, fast.
"There are also people who are obviously against the concept of even paying for a date. But the way I see it is whenever there's a demand for something and in this case a demand for a chance to fall in love with a beautiful person, some people are willing to pay for that shot," says Wade.
This past summer, WhatsYourPrice advertised that 20,000 new students signed up to Date-for-Dollars. On average a person makes about $121 per date. By tracking participants web addresses that end in "edu", WhatsYourPrice can tell which University's participate the most. Georgia State is number one. Only one Virginia school cracked the top 25. That was Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
"Yea, I definitely give it a shot if I could make some money doing it," says Jason Fitzgerald, a student at Virginia Western Community College.
"No, no I would not," says Molly McCambridge, a student at Hollins University.
Locally, most students have never heard of WhatsYourPrice.com. And while they can see how it would appeal to those who are buried under college debt, around these parts, this new generation still seems to have some old fashioned values.
"This is not the way to do it. Just imagine, the medium it is doing it, it will stick with them forever," says Bivishika Bhandari, a student at Hollins University.
"I'm more traditional. I'd like to meet someone to see how we are in real life," says Anthony Leonard, a student at Virginia Western Community College.
Currently, WhatsYourPrice.com says it has about 400,000 members. Not all of the members are college students, but the company advertises at venues where 20 somethings take notice.
