Some in need of cash are temporarily renting out rooms

Have you ever wondered what you could do with that spare bedroom in your home?

There's a new trend across the country. And it's growing here.

A website can turn your extra room into temporary lodging with the benefit of some extra income.

It can be a way to make some money or a way to save a couple dollars.

The website is called Airbnb.  And you can find a place to stay at a bargain.

River Laker’s bungalow style home sits in old southwest Roanoke. It's also listed on this website airbnb. You have the option of renting a room here or the entire house.

Laker  started listing his house on the website after using it several times as a customer.

“I thought I rather not get a part time job or other activity to earn income to keep going, and so it came to my mind to host on Airbnb,” Laker said.

Laker started listing his house in January and says that he's gotten more responses than what he had expected.

I've had someone attending a funeral, interview at Carillion, folks coming for the marginal arts festival, Blue Ridge Marathon,” Laker said.

Laker says he's met people from all walks of life.

Compared to hotels in the Roanoke area, you can find room rates on the site, like Laker's home starting at $56. It includes use of the kitchen, laundry facility, and wi-fi.

And with graduation season nearing, you can rent an entire house. One listed in Blacksburg is for $225 a night.  Laker's entire house goes for $87 a night.

In June he has quite the reservation.

“There's a family, a young couple, with a kid finishing up their studies at Hollins moving here for 40 days in a row. They've booked the whole house for forty days,” Laker said.

Laker wouldn't give us the specifics on the cost of that extended stay. But according to the website you rent the charming two bedroom bungalow for $2,100 a month.

Laker doesn't stay at the home when the whole house is rented out.
