Arbor Day brought a moment of silence for the victims of the Connecticut school shooting, and a living memorial here in southwestern Virginia.
Fifth graders at Greenfield Elementary planted a flowering cherry tree Friday afternoon in front of their Botetourt County school. They dedicated the tree in memory of those who died at Sandy Hook Elementary last December.
"It just symbolizes the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary," said student Peyton Kissner.
"We can remember what happened and thank all the people that did what they did to help those children," explained student Miette Veldman.
Southern States donated the tree. Greenfield Principal Laura Camp said she hopes the Arbor Day tree planting will become an annual tradition for fifth graders at the school.
