UPDATE: Tractor trailer accident on I-77 cleared, Congestion at I-77/I-81 interchange

A tractor trailer crash that snarled traffic all day on Interstate 77 has been cleared.  Congestion is causing new backups, however, at the Interstate 77/Interstate 81 interchange in Wythe County.

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports that congestion has caused a 7 mile backup in the northbound lanes of 77 approaching Interstate 81.  That backup was reported at 2:55 p.m.

The crash at mile marker 22 near the Wythe/Carroll County line caused backups as long as 14 miles.  VDOT reported the scene cleared at 2:20 p.m.

A tractor trailer crash on Interstate 77 continues to cause significant traffic backups in Carroll County.

At 12:40 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation reported a 14 mile backup.  The crash is at mile marker 22 near the Wythe/Carroll County line.

State police say the right lane and shoulder of Interstate 77 north at mile marker 22 will be closed for most of Friday.

State Police say a tractor trailer accident is causing the delay.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. Friday when the load on an 18 wheeler shifted as it rounded a curve, causing it to go over an embankment and exploded.

The driver has been identified as 24 year old Joshua Gant.  He was airlifted to a hospital in North Carolina with multiple burns and broken bones.

He is expected to be okay.
