Thousands turn out for Drumstick Dash in Roanoke

Thousands of people burned off some calories before Thanksgiving dinner all to help out others.

Runners and walkers of all ages started the 3-mile-run at 9:00 Thursday morning.

All the proceeds benefit the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

Organizers say many people believe the Rescue Mission is simply a shelter and a food bank.

"We also have a free clinic which acts as a safety net for those who are uninsured, unemployed or who don't have a place to live, so it'll go towards that, we have a drug and alcohol recovery program it'll benefit all of that, all of the proceeds stay right here in Roanoke." says Event Coordinator Matt King.
