Virginia State Police have identified the man killed in a shootout with law enforcement Wednesday near Christiansburg.
Investigators say Robert Kevin Hughes, 41, of Christiansburg died during the exchange of gunfire.
According to investigators, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Christiansburg Police Department were serving a felony drug warrant at a home in the 900 block of Ridgeway Drive.
A man ran out of the home and started shooting at officers, according to Virginia State Police. Gunshots were exchanged between Hughes and officers, and Hughes was subsequently shot. He died at the scene.
According to Hughes' girlfriend, who says she witnessed the shooting, Hughes got on a four-wheeler as law enforcement approached his home. He was eventually shot off of the four-wheeler.
Hughes has been in and out of jail since 1998 and has a history of DUI and drug possession convictions in Montgomery County and the Roanoke Valley, according to court documents.
In 1998 Hughes served 20 days in jail on charges out of Salem for not appearing in court on a petit larceny charge. In 2000, he was convicted of DUI in Salem but did not serve any jail time.
In 2002, Hughes was convicted on a probation charge and a possession of cocaine charge in Salem. He served three months in jail. In 2004, Hughes was convicted of a probation violation in Salem and served a year in jail.
More recently, Hughes was convicted of his fourth DUI in 10 years in 2008 in Montgomery County. He served nine months in jail.
5:20 p.m. Wednesday: A man was shot and killed by law enforcement officials Wednesday near Christiansburg as they were serving a warrant.
Law enforcement from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Christiansburg Police Department were serving a felony drug warrant when a man fired a pistol at them, according to investigators. Officers from both agencies then returned fire, shooting and killing the man.
The incident happened shortly after 3 p.m. at a mobile home community on Ridgeway Drive. The home is just outside of Christiansburg.
Investigators have not released the name of the man, but they say he is at least 18-years-old.
No one else was hurt.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Christiansburg Police Department are on scene.
Investigators are expected to hold a news conference at Cambria Baptist Church.
