Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson Jason Bond says the roundabout will open for traffic around midnight late Wednesday night/Thursday morning, weather permitting.
Bond says this is one of the area’s first roundabouts. There are roundabouts in Blacksburg and Roanoke County. Bond also said there are more roundabouts planned for the City of Roanoke.
Roundabouts are easier to maintain, cheaper, safer, and take up a smaller footprint, according to Bond.
Original story from 8:50 a.m. Wednesday
A new roundabout in Roanoke will open for traffic starting Wednesday night.
The roundabout is at the intersection of Riverland Road/Mount Pleasant Boulevard and Bennington Street in Roanoke.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says the temporary three-way stop and detour through the shopping center will be removed.
Drivers are asked to use caution.
VDOT says the purpose of the $8.4 million roundabout is to improve the intersection.
The entire project is expected to be finished in July.
