A security officer was killed early Wednesday morning in the parking lot of Afton Gardens Apartment complex in Roanoke.
Police say 46-year-old Steve Edwin Orange, Jr. of Vinton was shot to death just before 1:30 a.m. Orange was an armed security guard hired by Afton Gardens apartments.
The complex is in the 700 block of Hunt Avenue in Northwest Roanoke. Officers found Orange's body inside a Kia SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are still investigating. Right now, they do not have a suspect.
Orange was a former Roanoke City police officer. He worked for the department from 1989-2000, according to a department spokesman. Orange was also a part owner of Pro-Tek security service.
Wednesday's shooting marks the third deadly shooting in the neighborhood in the past three years. Last year, Dione Thomas was shot on Hunt Avenue. The man charged with his murder was found in West Virginia.
In 2008, James Stokes was shot outside of the Afton Gardens Apartments. The two men accused of shooting him were caught in New York.
