In a campground that comfortably fits 1,500 recreational vehicles, only a couple hundred are in place.
But Martinsville Speedway personnel aren't worried.
The big race is Sunday and this group of RV's is a bigger turnout that what was expected.
One group from around the nation came extra early this year to stake out the best location for a week of celebration.
"We are here for the camaraderie of our friends that we meet from all (over), Massachusetts, News York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and we have an annual reunion here and we love the Martinsville track," said Pennsylvania resident Jean Pompilio.
Pompilio, her husband and a group of their friends meet every year at the speedway. They met at the track eight years ago and have made the week a vacation ever since.
One couple in the group traveled all night to meet their friends.
"We try to travel light, because we always seem to go home with a lot more than we can down with," said Michele Hobart.
Hobart saves room for souvenirs and fabric for quilts. Three years ago the women of the gang made a quilt in one weekend and every year it makes it to the reunion.
Whether sitting in the stands or sewing fabric to make a quilt watching the race at a campsite, the race is only part of the adventure.
"It's a good time, everybody just hangs out and relaxes," Hobart said.
