David Edwards was given the national Smokey Bear award at a ceremony at Claytor Lake, Wednesday.
Edwards has worked for the Department of Forestry for 25 years as a forest technician.
Edwards was honored for his work investigating arson cases here in Virginia, and in surrounding states. He also started a program to use dogs to prevent fires and investigate arson cases.
"I was pretty excited," said Edwards. "It's an honor. I've known several employees who have received it before and it is an honor. It surprised me."
Edwards was one of four people in the southern region to recieve the award this year, but he's the only one in Virginia to be recognized.
