Our next story is about a place that used to be called "Mountain Lake Hotel.” It is probably best known for the film "Dirty Dancing."
For lots of folks around Southwest Virginia, the new Mountain Lake Lodge in Giles County is best known as the place where "Dirty Dancing" was filmed.
The former Mountain Lake Hotel couldn't survive the economic collapse, nor a disappearing lake.
"It just got to the point where it needed some help," general manager Jeff Burrell said.
The new Mountain Lake Lodge, surrounded by more than 2,500 acres and owned by an endowment, now boasts a new restaurant, tavern, updated rooms and a much more down to earth style, after a multi-million dollar renovation.
"You don't have to stay here, you come up here, enjoy what we've got to offer. You have a meal, you enjoy the music, you enjoy the rope course and you just enjoy what we've got," Burrell said.
Mountain Lake Lodge says it's rewritten the playbook and there's nothing snooty or uppity about it.
Meals are prepared from local farms whenever possible.
"It's new. If you were here the last couple of years, come back this year and next year. Moving forward and it's different, the whole plan is change is good," chef Cunninghame West said.
That change will include picnic dinners on the lawn, bluegrass, jazz, country and gospel, art festivals, and even a microbrew bash this weekend.
Some of the newest fun is outside above the ridgeline. Next month, Mountain Lake Treetop Adventures will have zip lines and high ropes for kids and adults, the only one of its kind around here.
Mountain Lake Lodge can sleep 500 people and is now officially open.
