Danville consignment shops and thrift stores see high number of donations

Out with the old and in with the new. This is one of the busiest times of the year for non-profit thrift stores and commercial consignment shops.

Designer purses, shoes on sale and kids toys galore. It's a sure sign Christmas is over that brings a sound consignment store owner Sylvia Josey lives for.

"People want to bring the most toys right after Christmas when they realize they have no room left for the new Santa Claus items. So they bring in their old toys right after Christmas. So we spent a large portion of last week boxing up these toys people were bringing in for sale after Christmas," Josey said.

Her business, Your Stuff and Kids' Stuff, has proven to be recession proof, offering financial incentives to customers to resale, donate or buy high end items at  lower prices.

"This week we've been sticking in our Summer things in with our Winter things," Josey said. "We're having to do a lot of switching around to make room."

The seasonal shuffle and influx of donations is creating a jumbled pile of holidays.

"It's crazy cause right after Christmas we kinda have to down play Christmas and then we kinda up play New Year's Eve you know so we get out all our fancy sparkly clothes and change out our displays," Josey said.

Filtering through donated goods is keeping volunteers and the staff at Goodwill in Danville extra busy too.

"We try to structure our workforce to work different days different hours. Our admin. staff volunteer. I mean I was out there slinging bags. We just all pitch in and do what has to be done," said Kevin Goins, Vice President of Retail Operations of Goodwill Industries in Southern Virginia.

This location has received more than 500 donations in the last week.
That number has dropped now since most donors were looking for a tax deduction before the end of the year.
Store managers believe this area's tough economy is also reflected in donations.

"People aren't replacing stuff as quickly as they used to. We got fewer computers this year, but we are starting to see some flat screen TVs," Goins said.

A bigger inventory means more shoppers looking for low cost items.

Right now this consignment shop is already moving past Christmas and is preparing for Valentine's Day, Easter, and even prom.
