Campbell County sheriff warns residents about suspicious phone calls

Some questionable phone calls are being made by a company claiming to be affiliated with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office.

Telemarketers are trying to sell refrigerator magnets to people in the county.  They claim to be calling on behalf of the sheriff's office, but the sheriff says he has nothing to do with the company.

Steve Hutcherson says the business that is making the calls appears to be legitimate, but no one from the organization got his consent to use the sheriff department's name.

Hutcherson says some of the telemarketers have been pushy and used inappropriate language.

"I don't want anybody representing themselves with sheriff's office being rude to people, being callous with people, or making people mad," Hutcherson said.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office is affiliated with three groups that sell items using its name.  They are the National Child Safety Council; Department Calendars, LLC; and the Virginia Sheriff's Institute.
