Franklin County, Va.—Matthew Miles knew getting a divorce would be difficult but not for the reasons he thought.
"I came across it from what you see right there in the phone book," says Miles.
The phone number, a 540 area code
"Lord forgive me I can't ask forgiveness for these people or anybody that I think is unethical," says Miles.
Miles and the man with the company, settled on a price of $399. He gave his credit card number on the phone. Then was told to go to a website to do a bit more paperwork. That's when he got the shocker.
"When I opened the email the first thing I noticed is it was a different company. Instead of it being a Divorce by Phone it was a Quick and Fast Divorce. Excuse me, Cheap and Fast Divorce out of New York City. A totally different website and the price had gone from $399 to $518," says Miles.
That seems to be the common gripe. People turning giving their credit card numbers and by the time they decide not to use the service, they have already been charged. The New York Better Business Bureau, where the company is supposed to be, has gotten nearly 30 customer complaints in the last year. That's a lot considering most New York online divorce companies only average six complaints a year.
"He is not an attorney. He is a document preparer," says Julie Wheeler of the Western Virginia Better Business Bureau.
Something else that's a big question mark, the company may not even be located in New York.
The Roanoke Better Business Bureau believes this is a one man show, not a company staffed with employees. So far, it's traced the possible owner to area codes in Norfolk, Arkansas, Ohio, Kansas, Texas, California, and six other cities.
The divorce website, does disclose its employees are not attorneys, but simply prepare the paperwork needed to end a marriage. But some customers claim while they may have gotten the documents, they were delayed, and left in the dark as to how to file the forms.
Miles says he simply got suckered. Quoted one price and charged another.
