Two dozen of the University of Connecticut's top administrators got raises ranging from $10,000 to $22,500 effective Aug. 9 — as life on the big Storrs campus remains insulated from economic conditions that have left the state struggling to balance its budget.
The raises ranged from a top rate of 5 percent — which 12 of the 24 received — down to 4.1 percent. The percentages are roughly the same as their management counterparts in executive branch agencies of the state government, although the amounts of the pay hikes are generally larger at UConn because the top administrators' salaries are higher to start with.
The salary figures for the non-union personnel were released in response to a Courant request.

UConn says the new salary levels are all within ranges set by a 2012 study by Sibson Consulting — a large human resources consulting firm — of the salaries at the country's top 50 public universities other than UConn. That study was commissioned by the school's board of trustees last year after controversy over disclosures that UConn's then-police chief made more money than New York city's police commissioner. The Sibson study was updated earlier this year, said UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz.
"The Sibson Report concludes that UConn's compensation packages are 'generally consistent with the salaries for positions with comparable duties and responsibilities' at peer institutions, notably the other top 50 national research universities in the nation," Reitz said. "These universities are our competitors for faculty, staff, students, and research funding."
"It's important to benchmark against similar institutions rather than setting our salaries in a vacuum," she said. "UConn cannot remove itself from the competitive factors in the higher education market by paying significantly below market rates for positions without jeopardizing the quality of education and research it provides and, by extension, its work to promote the state's economy and job creation."
