The remains of 66-year-old Hervey Medellin were found in Bronson Canyon Park near the Hollywood sign in January. Only his head, hands and feet were recovered.
Detectives have said that Medellin may have been a concierge for the Cali Cartel during the 90s.
The now-defunct drug cartel operated in Mexico and the United States.
KTLA's law enforcement sources said Medellin's activity was reportedly legal -- renting limos and and hotel rooms, and even shopping with the wives of the cartel's men.
"There's something we're following through on, and you know, can't substantiate one way or another at this point in time," LAPD Capt. William Hayes said.
Friends say art was Medellin's passion, and that a lot of his money was in the artwork hanging on his walls.
But Hayes, who is the head of LAPD's elite Robbery-Homicide Division, said Medellin's artwork may not have been as expensive as some believed.
"We have not seen anything at this point in time that would substantiate that it was of extreme value," Hayes told KTLA.
Sources say that Medellin told his boyfriend on the day before Christmas in 2011 that he was going to Mexico on business.
Medellin had in the past traveled to Mexico regularly as a flight attendant for Mexicana Airlines.
He left behind his cell phone, taking with him a calling card. He reportedly called his boyfriend every day for several days through New Year's.
His last phone call reportedly said he had just crossed back into the U.S. and would be home within hours.
When he never showed, the boyfriend filed a missing person's report, and on January 16 -- some 21 days after he left Hollywood -- Medellin's severed remains were found.
Police have said that the boyfriend is not currently a suspect in the case.
"Obviously we don't have a motive and we don't have a suspect," Hayes told KTLA.
The boyfriend has since moved to Texas, but is said to be cooperating.
Some speculated that Medellin's killer could be the Canadian cannibalism suspect, who lived in Los Angeles at one time.
29-year-old Luka Rocco Magnotta, a self-proclaimed gay porn star, is accused of murdering a young man, dismembering his body and mailing it to government agencies in Canada.
But police insist that there is no link between the two cases.
Sources say the likelihood that Medellin was the victim of a drug cartel is also slim to none.
The likelihood of a gay lovers' triangle is an angle that instigators are exploring.
Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD.
