Each week we tell viewers what they can get for free. This week's free list: 1) A presentation that shows how math and art collide: Museum of Mathematics at Baruch College; 2) 106.7 Lite FM presents Broadway in Bryant Park. (various broadway performances will be presented throughout the summer)
Mathematician Angela Vierling-Claassen reveals how math and art inevitably collide in a free, open to the public presentation titled "From Points to Paints: How Math Altered the Course of Modern Art." This presentation is part of an ongoing program "Math Encounters," a public presentation series dedicated to showcasing the beauty, creativity, and real world applications of mathematics presented by the Museum of Mathematics. Peter Reed, Senior Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs at the Museum of Modern Art, will introduce the presentation.
In the 1800s and early 1900s, it was in vogue for mathematicians to create mathematical models, objects generally made of plaster and wire which were used to illustrate mathematical formulas. Artists of this time, such as Max Ernst, Man Ray, and Naum Gabo, found these bizarre shapes intriguing, and were compelled to create their own art inspired by these models. This presentation will explore how mathematical pursuits led to revolutionary, new artistic forms, as well as how the big ideas of mathematics-- symmetry, scale, and infinity-- are used by artists. The presentation will conclude with the audience constructing their own math model.
The Museum of Mathematics will open in NYC in 2012 and will boast dynamic exhibits and programs that will stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of math.
