JAMAICA, QUEENS (WPIX)—PIX 11 hit the streets of Jamaica, Queens Monday to pass out informational flyers about this Saturday's gun buyback program
The number of shooting victims in New York City sits at 1,095 and keeps rising each week.
Senator Malcolm Smith, and the New York City Housing Authority are teaming up to help tackle the issue of illegal guns on the streets.
Here is what you need to know if you or someone you know has an illegal gun and wants to turn it in for cash.
You can turn in the guns at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church at 122-05 Smith Street in Queens from 10am-4pm, anonymously!
The gun needs to be operable, meaning it is able to fire. Once it is inspected by a member of the NYPD, you will get a two-hundred dollar cash card , no questions asked.
You can turn in as many guns as you want, but will only be paid for three. Rifles and shotguns can also be turned in, but for twenty-dollars.
Now, many people PIX11 ran into on the streets of Queens on Monday were asking how , if they had a gun, can they bring it safely to the church.
Retired Police Detective Wally Zeins explains the need to take the ammo out, place the gun in a plastic or paper bag and box, then put it in the trunk of your car.
If you are taking public transportation, put in in a bag and box, and carry it, unloaded.
The important thing to remember is that this is anonymous.
