Cheyenne Hua, 14, of Bayside, Queens is the runner-up in the 14th Annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Cheyenne entered the competition with the speed bump project (essentially she designed a speed bump that, just using a lever and timer, pops up in the street when it senses a speeding car) but after working with her mentor this summer she evaluated different problems and she chose to focus on the innovation she presented at the final competition because of the increased flooding that was happening in our area. It's an external house covering that will rise as water levels rise so that water cannot seep into the house and cause damage.
