A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after Anchorage police say he drove a sedan across a Midtown street and struck a coffee stand, injuring the woman working inside.
APD spokesperson Dani Myren says Patrick Michael Osbon, 28, was taken into custody after police responded to the scene of the crash -- near a Holiday gas station at 1405 Bragaw St. -- where the Arctic Grounds coffee stand was struck by a Nissan Altima.
Police say Osbon had picked up a passenger in Mountain View, then headed south on Bragaw.
“The passenger said the driver offered him marijuana, while the driver was doing vodka shooters,” Myren said.
After the Altima passed through Bragaw’s intersection with DeBarr Road police say it made a left turn, taking out a no-left-turn sign. It then crossed both Bragaw’s median and oncoming lanes, going airborne before striking the coffee stand.
According to Myren, officers at the scene say Osbon still had enough energy to flee the scene after the collision.
“The driver exits the vehicle and starts staggering away at a fair rate of speed,” Myren said.
Officers were called to the coffee stand at 1:19 p.m., where witnesses pointed out Osbon to them. After a brief foot chase, he was apprehended about 100 yards from the crash site, where Myren says he blew more than four-and-a-half times the state’s 0.08 legal limit for blood-alcohol content.
Myren says a woman working in the coffee stand sustained apparently minor injuries in the crash.
“It looks like the driver hit the coffee stand, and items fell and hit the employee,” Myren said.
Medics evaluated the woman at the scene, and a friend drove her to a local hospital or clinic in a private vehicle for treatment.
The Altima’s passenger, Jeff Satterfield, tells Channel 2 the Altima nearly struck a Municipality of Anchorage power box before hitting the west side of the Arctic Grounds stand. He says there were open containers in the back of the vehicle.
Osbon has been charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, third-degree assault and felony criminal mischief. He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.
