Southwest Airlines finally lands in Wichita.
Hundreds of passengers lined-up to take-off.
When passengers stepped off the inaugural flight Sunday afternoon, there were cheers all around.
Plans have been in the works for years.
"When are we going to get Southwest? For years, 20 years before me, elected officials would be asked that and would say, we're working on it, we're working on it. So persistence, hard work, these are our benefits today," said Mayor Carl Brewer.
The airline kicked off the inaugural flights with a celebration. As the first passengers arrived in Wichita from Chicago, there were some of the city's mascots to greet them, including WuShock from Wichita State University.
Frequent fliers hope the additional airline will help keep prices competitive. Southwest is known for it's cheaper fares. But for some, it's all about the simple pleasures.
"They still give you peanuts without having to pay $5, that's probably the best thing about southwest," said Daniel Name.
Southwest's initial schedule will include two daily flights to Chicago, two flights to Dallas and one flight to Las Vegas. Airline officials tell me there are plans to add many more destinations.
