Donald Putman (March 20, 2013)

One person is dead after a crash involving several cars on the Kansas Turnpike Wednesday morning.

It happened at around 12:30 am on I-35 near Pawnee.

KHP says two passenger cars and a semi crashed while trying to avoid those buses. The driver of one of those cars, identified as 60-year-old Donald Putman of Wichita, was killed.

No one else was hurt in the crash.

Both bus drivers were taken into custody and could face charges.

"On the turnpike, it's illegal to tow a vehicle with a flexible towing device, such as a strap, a chain, a rope," Kansas Turnpike Authority Master Trooper Patrick Kelly said to our news partners at KFDI. "It's required to have a rigid coupling device between the vehicles. That coupling device broke and failed."

Southbound traffic at I-35 over Pawnee was shut down for several hours overnight, but is back open.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
