Juneau, AK—House and Senate negotiators have agreed on a bill establishing a long-term funding source for student scholarships.
It retains a waiver of course requirements for graduates who couldn't complete classes for reasons beyond their control, like lack of reasonable access to the classes at their schools, but extends to 24 months the time students have to take the needed courses.
The bill also splits funding between Alaska Performance scholarships and a program that provides aid for students with financial needs.
Rep. Bill Thomas says Gov. Sean Parnell helped negotiate the compromise.
Parnell has championed performance scholarships as a way to transform Alaska's public education system.
