A man was arrested and charged with assault Monday after severely biting an off-duty Anchorage police officer who was volunteering at a soup kitchen.
APD officers Joel Breiner and Patrick Martin were volunteering at the Downtown Soup Kitchen while they were off duty when they were called to assist with a disturbance that had broken out between two males on the soup kitchen's patio. The officers ordered the two subjects to "break it up," according to an APD report.
One subject complied and began to walk away but the other, later identified as Stephen Faigle, 19, continued to be combative with the officers. Faigle swung at and severely bit Officer Breiner in the arm.
The officers were able to control Faigle with the help of another soup kitchen volunteer until on-duty officers arrived on location and took Faigle into custody.
Faigle consented to a blood draw to test for communicable diseases and drugs because of the severity of Officer Breiner's bite wound.
During the incident Nora Hanes, Faigle's girlfriend, was continuously yelling profanities at the officers. She was subsequently taken into custody and charged with disorderly conduct.
