15 arrested when Mexican boat lands on local beach
Fifteen suspected illegal immigrants were arrested after coming ashore in Encinitas early Tuesday.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew on routine patrol spotted the panga, an open Mexican fishing boat powered by an outboard motor, at sea, said USCG Petty Officer Henry Dunphy.

The boat, called the Estrella, beached at about 3 a.m. in the vicinity of Grandview Beach, which is in Encinitas' Leucadia neighborhood.

In recent months, immigrant smugglers have increased their used of pangas to make the dangerous voyage from the Baja Mexican fishing village of Popotla to San Diego County beaches.
