LA JOLLA, Calif.—An elderly man didn't let his age or his oxygen tank stop him from robbing a bank in La Jolla Saturday morning. The FBI said the robber got away and is still on the loose. A surveillance camera captured several shots of the alleged culprit who authorities say is in his 70s or 80s and carried his oxygen tank during the robbery.
"Not your typical bank robber by any stretch of the imagination," said Lynn Scott who is visiting La Jolla from Florida.
Fox 5 showed the pictures of the alleged robber to several folks in La Jolla to get reaction.
"Some people are up against it in this economy," said John Scott. "It's really scary, and he probably felt he had nothing to lose."
Authorities said the robber walked in to the San Diego National Bank, located at 7877 Ivanhoe, in La Jolla and handed the teller a note demanding money. It's unclear if he had a weapon. The man then fled on foot with the cash and got away.
"The guy has to be desperate to do that and the sad part about it is he probably needs help more than people realize," said passerby Bob Callahan.
Authorities describe the robber as a tall white man who stand about 6'4." He is said to have gray hai,r and a gray mustache and he has liver spots on his skin. The robber wears prescription glasses, carries an oxygen tank and was dressed nicely in a blazer and golf hat.
