You can't get away from the erectile dysfunction commercials on TV, for years, Viagra and Cialis have have helped men with their sexual problems. Now, a drug that failed to help depression is helping women to increase their sexual desire. Kenya Criswell says that's good news.

"I don't really have a strong sex drive, so I don't know, I might say hey, I might use it to be honest." Says Kenya.

A German drug company started testing the drug flibanserin for depression, but it's now focusing on using the drug to improve women's sexual desire. Texas Health Dallas Dr. Hampton Richards says more than half of his patients complain of low sex drive.

"I get patients everyday asking me about low sexual desire and what the magic pill is to treat it." Says Dr. Richards.

There are therapies that can help, but Dr. Richards says there is a need for a drug with fewer side effects.

"I think that the benefit of this drug is that there are a lot less of a side effect profile that other medications that have been passed for low sexual desire in the past, like testosterone, which can cause masculinization of female patients." Says Dr. Richards.

Unlike Viagra or Cialis, which increased blood flow for men with erectile dysfunction, the pill for women in the brain by enhancing the mood. Brandy Henderson says that's not surprising.

"I think it's awesome, I think it's great. I think that they would go through the brain of a woman to reach her libido." Says Brandy.

Dr. Richards says the danger is giving women the impression their sexuality isn't adequate, but he admits that female a female Viagra-like drug will be a licence to print money for drug companies.

"The comment made down the hall was that every woman in America is going to be knocking down our door, and if they're not, their husbands are." Says Dr. Richards.

A recent study of 2,000 pre-menopausal women found the drug resulted in significant improvement in their sex drive.

The drug has not been approved by the FDA.
