The Washington State Democratic Party announced Friday that it would get rid of $70,000 in donations from mystic author JZ Knight after videos became public of the Yelm resident making offensive comments about Mexicans, Jews, gays and Catholics.
Knight is the founder of the Ramtha School of Enlightenment, based in Yelm, Wash., and claims to channel a spiritual entity named Ramtha, a 35,000-year-old warrior. She has written books, appeared on numerous TV talk shows and her teachings have attracted entertainment figures such as Shirley MacLaine and Linda Evans.
"Recently, we have been made aware of comments made by a contributor to the Democratic Party that do not reflect the values of our party,” Washington State Democratic Party Chairman Dwight Pelz said. “While we did not solicit any contributions from JZ Knight at any point, it is important that we make it clear that we view her comments as offensive and do not condone this kind of vitriol.
"Today, I am announcing that the Washington State Democrats will be donating $35,000 to the Anti-Defamation League, and contributing $35,000 to the Referendum 74 (gay marriage) campaign. We as Democrats strongly value equality and inclusiveness, values shared by the ADL and supporters of marriage equality."
Knight videos were released Friday by the Freedom Foundation, a conservative think-tank in Olympia. In one video, Knight refers to “the invasion of the Mexicans who just breed like rabbits.” In another, Knight says “all gay men were once Catholic women.”
