Valley Police Beat: Suspected human smuggler arrested

Around 7 p.m., a 2012 Hyundai Sonata driven by U.S. citizen Thomas Firmin, 19, approached the checkpoint located between Westmorland and Salton City.
A canine detection team alerted to the vehicle, and it was referred to secondary inspection where agents found a 38-year-old Mexican national hidden in the truck.
The man showed signs of heat-related injuries, and agents immediately contacted emergency medical technicians who transported the man to Pioneer’s Memorial Hospital.
The man was later released and transported for processing.
Firmin was taken into custody.

Thousands in tools taken
EL CENTRO — Some $2,000 worth of tools were taken from a car shop near the 700 block of Broadway Avenue on Tuesday.
A wrench set, miscellaneous Craftsman hand tools and a plasma cutter worth some $1,600 were some of the tools stolen, according to El Centro Police call logs.
The point of entry was possibly the interior shop door and a padlock was broken.
No evidence or suspect information was available.
Domestic battery alleged, man arrested
EL CENTRO — A 53-year-old man was arrested after a couple’s dispute in a motel room near the 1200 block of Adams Avenue on Tuesday night.
The female, who refused medical attention, was allegedly thrown onto the floor and at some point bit the man’s hand during the incident reported around 8:20 p.m., according to El Centro police call logs.
Rodney Anthony Dangerfield was arrested and booked into county jail later that night.
The dispute was sparked over a child, the logs note, but no further details were listed in the logs.
