Cutting $84 million from the federal budget set back Calexico’s Port of Entry project and Imperial County as a whole, said a federal legislator Tuesday.
U.S. Rep. Bob Filner, D-Chula Vista, reported to the Imperial County Board of Supervisors that while the project has been cut from the budget, the fight is still on to get it in next year’s funding.
The project to expand the downtown Calexico port of entry was voted out of the federal budget last week as part of the $894 million General Service Administration construction budget cut.
“The cutting is just going like crazy without thought,” Filner said.
The port expansion is important for efficiency, the economy and travel across the border, he said. However, the General Service Administration construction budget is an easy target that didn’t seem to have a lot of pressure behind it.
“It was so close to getting done,” he said. “Everything had been planned. We worked out the number of dates with your help.
“We need to have that 100 jobs,” he added. “That’s hundreds of jobs in an $84 million restoration project.”
