“Typically on Sundays we go to church and then we go home and everyone does their own thing,” said Alquijay.
Alquijay was able to share a unique experience with her family because Starts with the Arts Foundation began its summer workshops Sunday with a free acrylic painting class.
“My kids were really excited to come out and paint at the workshop,” said Alquijay.
Adults and children learned the basics of acrylic painting, said Graciela Ojeda, instructor of the Introduction to Acrylic Paints on Canvas workshop.
“Many of the instructors give their time because we appreciate art,” said Ojeda. “We want to help others in the community have that love for art as well.”
Ojeda is a self-taught artist.
She reached out to the foundation in hopes of instructing a workshop where artistically inclined children could express themselves, said Ojeda.
“I choose acrylic painting because this is an introduction workshop,” said Ojeda. “It is easier to fix mistakes with acrylics and it’s a good way to start learning the fundamentals of painting.”
David Varela, founder of Starts with Arts Foundation, said he felt it was a good idea to start off the summer workshops with a traditional painting class.
“Acrylic painting is kind of how I got started,” said Varela. “With acrylics you can make mistakes and can use that as a gateway to create something unique.”
Monse Fajardo, of Calexico, said she came to the workshop in hopes of learning a little more about drawing.
“I came because I wanted to experience an art class,” she said. “I think it is great to learn painting and drawing. Who knows you may eventually have your own art to showcase.”
Alquijay’s daughter Ellie, 3, typically showcases her works of art on the family’s refrigerator door.
Ellie worked on her latest masterpiece, a flower pot with flowers, during the workshop.
“I am going to paint it pink because that is my favorite color,” said Ellie.
