For one month, two local high school students will have the opportunity to receive professional training in music, theater and film during their time at the California State Summer School for the Arts.
The CSSSA is a rigorous, month-long training program in the visual and performing arts, creative writing, animation and film for talented artists of high school age, according to its website.
“This is my second year auditioning,” said Roman, a 15-year-old Brawley High sophomore. “I wasn’t accepted last year so I was pretty excited when I found out I got in.”
An active member in his school’s drama club, Roman said he has always had a passion for acting and telling stories.
“I did my first play when I was 3 years old,” he said. “Ever since then I’ve been auditioning for everything I’ve seen in the paper. In my 12 years of experience I’ve done about 20 plays.”
During the month-long program, the local teens will stay at the California Institute of the Arts, a fully accredited degree granting institution of higher learning for students of the visual, cinematic and performing arts, in Valencia, according to CSSSA’s website.
“I really want to go over there with an open mind and take in the message of theater,” Roman said. “I want to grow as an artist and as a person and I think I’ll learn a lot about myself there.”
Ilianna, a junior at Calexico High, said she was also going into the program with an open mind in order to take in as much information possible about the world of film.
“I just want to learn as much as I can about filmmaking because it’s something I love,” the 17-year-old said. “I’ve directed and filmed two skits for school and it was a lot of fun.”
Ilianna said she loved working behind the scenes and being part of a successful group effort.
“I like seeing peoples’ passion for acting come through,” she said. “A lot of people might not take students who want to be actors seriously, but you can tell that they love what they are doing and I like capturing that.”
