Walnut Street Community Health Center will provide free dental sealants to Washington County children as part of a collaborative effort between the center and the Washington County Health Department, with funding support of nearly $10,000 from the Office of Oral Health of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Dental sealants, which can cost up to $60 per tooth, are thin coatings that are applied to the pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of the permanent back teeth. Sealants keep germs and food particles that cause tooth decay out of the grooves in the teeth. Applying sealants is short and easy, and no anesthesia is needed. Sealants can last as long as five years or more with proper maintenance.
The Walnut Street Dental Practice sees child dental patients at 24 N. Walnut St. in Hagerstown.
The Walnut Street dental team and the Healthy Smiles in Motion mobile dental unit will travel to selected Washington County public schools and area locations to provide sealants to Washington County children.
