Ruritan members attend national convention

Frederick County has seven Ruritan clubs. Ruritan is considered the leading community service organization in the United States.
Each year, representatives from throughout Ruritan hold their national convention. Delegates from the Potomac District joined others from throughout the nation recently at the convention at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Ky.
Recognized at the convention were 2013 Potomac District Gov. Donald Foster of the Mount Pleasant Ruritan and past District Gov. John Lovell Jr. of the Jefferson Ruritan Club.
During the convention, the two participated in various functions, such as serving as sergeant of arms at various activities, assisting during the flag ceremony and serving on several committees that supported the convention.
Several of the Ruritan clubs from Frederick County were among the 627 registered participants.
During the awards portion of the business meeting, the Potomac District, as well as some individual clubs from the district, received national recognition.
As a district, the Potomac District made an excellent showing. Ruritan National Foundation awards were presented to the district for the most dollars donated by clubs, as well as highest average donation per member. Also, the area Ruritans received the 2012 District Website top honors. The website can be found at www.potomacdistrictruritan.com.
A presidential award was presented to the district for its laptop loaner program instituted in 2012. The program provides a laptop to clubs who want to utilize technology for record keeping.
Several individual clubs received national recognition at the convention.
The Wilson Club of Hagerstown received an award as one of the top clubs with the greatest percentage increase in membership for midsize clubs.
The Jefferson (Md.) Ruritan Club received an award as one of the top 10 clubs with the greatest percentage increase in membership for large-size clubs.
The Marlowe Ruritan Club of Falling Waters, W.Va., received second place for its 2012 club website.
The New Franklin (Pa.) Ruritan Club received an award for the outstanding Ruritan 4-H leader.
The next Ruritan national convention will be Jan. 23 to 26, 2014, in Branson, Mo.
