Washington County will play host to a professional barbecue competition Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26, at Fort Ritchie in Cascade.
Dubbed “The Memorial Day Pignic,” the competition will feature 45 to 60 professional barbecue teams from the East Coast competing for more than $7,500 in cash prizes and awards.
Many of the teams competing have been featured on the TV show “BBQ Pitmasters” and include the KCBS National Team of the Year, 3 Eyz BBQ.
The teams will be competing in four meat categories, including ribs, chicken, pork butt and brisket, that will be judged by Kansas City BBQ Association-certified barbecue judges.
There also will be two additional categories — Iron Chef Choice and People’s Choice competitions.
The People’s Choice competition will provide attendees with an opportunity to taste and judge barbecue made by the professional teams.
The event also will feature a children’s zone with inflatable rides, climbing wall, paddle boats and kayaks for lake excursions, helicopter rides, laser tag, barbecue teams/vendors selling pork, brisket, ribs, etc., as well as pigtail fries and other foods.
For adults, the event will feature a beer garden and sound stage, with bands playing a variety of music over both days and the Bull Ride Challenge, a chance to ride the bull the whole way and get VIP passes, including free beverages and barbecue.
The event is open to the public and all proceeds will support the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southcentral, Pa., and the mid-Atlantic region.
Admission costs $8 per carload. Soldiers in uniform get in free.
