The hoax threat was called in to Growing Tree Preschool in the Marion Mennonite Church, 4365 Molly Pitcher Highway, or U.S. 11, at about 2 p.m., said Trooper Robert T. Hicks, a police spokesman.
The caller said a device would go off as the children were being dismissed, Hicks said.
All the children were safely evacuated to Shalom Christian Academy at 126 Social Island Road, where their parents picked them up, Shalom Christian Academy Administrator Angie Petersheim said Friday afternoon.
Growing Tree is operated by Shalom and is within walking distance of the of the academy, Petersheim said.
State police called in a bomb-sniffing K-9 team and the suspicious device was found outside a doorway to the school, Hicks said. A bomb team determined that the device was not capable of causing an explosion, he said.
The K-9 and bomb teams then searched inside the school and did not find any other devices, Hicks said.
During the incident, Molly Pitcher Highway was closed between Lighthouse and Social Island roads. At 7:40 p.m. Hicks sent an e-mail saying the road was about to reopen.
