Pictures: V-J Day Famous Kiss In Times Square
George Mendonsa is widely believed to be the sailor kissing an unsuspecting nurse (actually a dental hygienist) on Victory over Japan (V-J) Day in Times Square on August 14, 1945. The photograph, taken by Life Magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, is regarded as one of the most iconic images of the 20th century.

A lifelong fisherman in Newport, Rhode Island, Mendonsa was quickly identified as a competent navigator and promoted to the rank of quartermaster.
